A message from Reds Captain, Dick Balchin:
Liphook Reds is officially the third team in Liphook and when I was asked to take on the role as captain I knew last year that it could be a challenging season ahead. We had so many first year bowlers at the club that there would be times early in the season when we would be very much learning on the job and would struggle to be competitive.
That is exactly how the season went early on. As the season continued, I was delighted at the way it ended as we finished by taking points off our opponents and completed our Three Counties season by winning spectacularly at home to Rowledge B.
The Red team was picked for me in 2024. I made sure that for 2025 that I would be with the White team when their skippers met up to pick the White team bowlers for 2025. I felt it was important that the Reds got a pick of bowlers who could both play for the second team and the Reds. In an afternoon of negotiation, I managed to get a team that I think can be competitive in Division 4. I fought hard to make sure we have four experienced skippers in myself, Luc Callewaert, Sue Collis and Jeannette Warne. I was very pleased that we kept Mariella Polignano and Luc Callewaert in the Reds and that I managed to bring Jeannette in as a skipper. We’re going to need all of her experience in 2025.
We also have some very good second year bowlers. Lynne Richards and Julie Robertson bring all their experience from 2024 into this season. Michael Knight brings his experience from last years Harlequin and Rita Warren brings her bowling experience onto the green as she comes into her own in the second half of the season.
I’m also delighted with our leads. Wendy Freeman would play lead for any team in the Three Counties as she is such a good bowler and we welcome into the Reds this season Eleanor Walker who we’re expecting great things from and first year bowler Jerry Kneller who starred in the Harlequin last summer at the club.
It’s going to be a great season in 2025 and I’m personally hoping for a double Liphook promotion out of Division 4.
