A message from Whites Captain, Gareth Rees:
Liphook Whites is the second team in Liphook. Last season the team tried to get the balance between giving new members a first taste of competitive bowls alongside existing members who are willing to drop down to Division 4 and help the team have the best season we can.
As 2023 captain Tony Gniotek will tell you the White team recognised at the beginning of the 2023 season that whilst we had lots of bowlers who wanted to play we didn’t unfortunately have enough skippers. We scored some 640 shots in our league campaign which was not far behind Farnham who finished 3rd in our division. We conceded however nearly 800 shots which was by far the worst in our division.
If Tony would have had 3 good skippers available for all of our matches then we would have had in those crucial moments been able to have an experienced skipper reduce a deficit significantly. Unfortunately Dick Balchin and Lesley Meredith were unavailable to us for large parts of the season. Bruce Penny did a terrific job bringing on Hilary Copp and myself who were both new bowlers. Whilst Tony worked with Ron Mancey and Karen Robertson who were both excellent. Karen became a skipper for us in only her second full season.
Liphook Whites started the season very well but then fell away a little bit as a lack of skippers took a bit of a toll on us. We were pleased though with the start we had and the fact that we took points off of Sutton and Alton Social who both got promoted. We finished bottom of Division 4 in 2022 and improved to 7th in 2023 - so progress!
In 2024 we are hopeful that we will be competing at the top of the league with our new bowlers having had a year of league experience from last year. We have some dynamite seconds in Jeannette Warne, who was devastating against Headley in our last game of 2023, as well as super seconds in Hilary Copp and Helen Thurgood. This year we have the experience of Ron Holt as a lead alongside our great leads from 2023 in Ron Mancey, Alan Donovan and new boy Colin Richards. We are also delighted that we will have 4 excellent skippers available to add knowledge to our league campaign with Tony Gniotek and Tony Wareham alongside Karen Robertson and the returning Lesley Meredith.
