From October until March we play short mat bowls in our club house. We have room for two mats and during the off season our members play every Monday evening at 6pm, Wednesday afternoon at 2pm and Friday evening at 6pm.
We also have a busy fixture list with friendly matches against other clubs during the week and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Short mat is a very skilful game with the margin for error made even more tricky by the relative shortness of the mat that we play on. You also have to get the balance between not bowling your wood to hard or to soft and getting your wood past the block in the middle of the mat.
The jack is placed by the skipper on the white line in the centre of the mat. As with lawn bowls the aim is to get your wood or your teams wood closest to the jack.
In short mat there are also added elements that you have to do. You must get your wood past the first hoizontal white line to be in the count. However if it goes past the second horizontal white line the wood is out.

Short mat is a lot of fun, a great way to get out and socialise and good way to play bowls during the winter.
It also makes you think about your stance, keeping your arm straight and how you release the wood. All essential skills to play lawn bowls.
